Roundabouts in Roswell

RoundaboutConcept

–Roswell City Communications Department

The City of Roswell is preparing to begin construction on the City’s first roundabout at the intersection of Grimes Bridge Road and Norcross Street/Warsaw Road.  The five-leg roundabout will allow the removal of the traffic signal and allow traffic to move freely through the intersection.

Roswell DOT has prepared material to inform you about how roundabouts work and how to travel through them.  There is strong evidence from across the United States and in Georgia that confirms roundabouts:

  • reduce accidents and injury crashes
  • provide increased pedestrian and bicycle safety
  • reduce vehicle speeds
  • reduced vehicle delay and fuel consumption
  • improve air quality by reduced vehicle idling
  • reduce electricity usage (by removing existing traffic signal) therefore less cost to the city
  • reduce road noise
  • provide a sustainable, aesthetically pleasing improvement

In terms of the Grimes Bridge/Warsaw/Norcross roundabout project, it is important to note that:

  • Modern roundabouts are safer than a traditional intersection with a traffic signal
  • No houses will be taken or demolished as a result of this project
  • No significant specimen trees will be removed or harmed due to this intersection improvement project
  • The construction of this project requires no road closures
  • The construction cost is estimated to be $950,000

Additional information is available in the Roundabout FAQs including City responses to misinformation being distributed in the community

Roswell Mayor Jere Wood holds up the Green Communities Certification recently awarded to the city by the Atlanta Regional Commission.

Roswell is one of four cities in the Atlanta region to earn Green Communities Certification for leadership in reducing their environmental impact. The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) presented the certifications to local officials at December’s board meeting. DeKalb and Douglas counties and the cities of Atlanta, Fairburn, Roswell and Suwanee earned their certifications by implementing sustainability practices and policies in 10 categories, ranging from energy efficiency and green building to transportation and water efficiency.

As an Energy Star partner, Roswell’s Energy Strategy for the Future defines the city’s fundamental commitment to protect the environment through the continuous improvement of its energy performance. Roswell estimates that it will save $62,000 annually from the replacement of traffic signals and school zone flashers with LED bulbs. The Leita Thompson Park dog park lighting is solar powered. The city has a no net loss of trees policy, and trees that cannot be replaced onsite will be planted on other government property. The Tree Planting Partnership is a public-private partnership to improve tree canopy and density on public lands. It has resulted in the planting of 788 hardwoods and 3,838 shrubs and flowers. Roswell offers commute options to staff that include a flexible work arrangements policy provides for telecommuting, compressed work week and flex time. Recycling containers at government facilities are located at individual desks and in common areas for traditional and non-traditional recycling. Residents of single-family homes have curbside recycling, and multi-family complexes are required to provide recycling. Roswell’s zoning ordinance provides incentives for mixed use zoning districts and the Midtown Roswell Overlay District.

Founders Day Lineup

Homer the Brave

JOHNS CREEK, GA—Baseball season is months away, but the Atlanta Braves will bring a little bit of Turner Field to Johns Creek when the franchise’s entertainment team takes part in Johns Creek’s Founders Day Parade on Dec. 5.

The team’s official mascot, “Homer the Brave,” known for his antics and charm with fans of all ages, heads up the group. Homer has been a staple of the Braves game-day entertainment.  He will be joined by the “Tomahawk Team,” which provides a little southern hospitality to all the guests who enter the ballpark.

Setting the tempo for the Braves group’s appearance will be the “Heavy Hitters,” one of the most electrifying, exciting drumlines in the Southeast.

The Braves entourage appearance, sponsored by Ciba Vision, is the newest addition to the 2009 Johns Creek Founders Day Parade.

Since its creation in December 2007, the parade has grown to include more than 100 units and several thousand participants. Founders Day itself has expanded from a one-day event to a weeklong celebration of the city’s Dec. 1, 2006 incorporation.

The parade steps off at 10 a.m. and travels State Bridge Road from West Morton Road, ending at Ocee Elementary School at Kimball Bridge Road. Emmy Award-winning news anchor and Johns Creek resident Karyn Greer from WXIA 11Alive News will once again serve as emcee.

Headlining this year’s celebration is the orange-and-white #20 Home Depot Toyota Camary, which has been tearing up the NASCAR circuit.  The 2009 orange-and-white NASCAR Sprint Cup Toyota Camry will rumble its way along the 1.3-mile parade route down State Bridge Road, then on to Newtown Park where it will be on display as part of the “Santa at Newtown” festivities. Visitors can check out the car up close, take photos and purchase souvenirs from the Home Depot Racing merchandise trailer.nascar20

The car is part of the Joe Gibbs Racing Team, owned by the legendary former Super Bowl-winning coach of the NFL Washington Redskins, and driven by former Johns Creek resident Joey Logano, who lived here briefly in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

The 18-year-old has set the NASCAR world on fire in his inaugural season and is currently ranked 19th in the Sprint-Cup Driver standings and 14th in the Nationwide rankings. Logano unfortunately is not able to attend the parade, as he will be at the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Awards Ceremony in Las Vegas, where he is the heavy favorite to take Rookie of the Year honors.

The Albany Marine Corps Band will lead five musical marching units in the holiday-themed event celebrating Johns Creek’s founding.  The band is one of only 12 bands throughout the Corps. Stationed at the Marine Corps Logistic Command in Albany, Ga., this band of 50 Marines travels throughout the United States and internationally to fulfill its mission as the Marine Corps’ musical ambassadors.

albany-mbThe band provides music for military ceremonies, community celebrations, recruiting programs and official events. In 2009, they traveled more than 20,000 miles to perform in over 100 locations such as New York City at the Statue of Liberty and a Yankees game, Essex Junction, Vt., Springfield, Mass., and at New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The Albany Marine Band performed for more than 300,000 people nationwide.

With music as their primary mission, all Marine musicians in the band are selected by audition and must maintain a high level of instrumental proficiency. Additionally, with the Marine Corps tradition of “every Marine a rifleman,” all Marines in the band are fully trained to fulfill their secondary mission of bearing arms in the defense of our nation.

The band’s appearance is being sponsored by iXP Corp., the Cranbery, N.J.-based firm that operates the joint 911 Emergency Communications Center for Johns Creek and Sandy Springs. Joining the Albany Marine Band will be the marching bands from Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview high schools.

The day concludes with Santa at Newtown Park from 1 to 3 p.m., where children can visit with Old Saint Nick and pose for pictures (so parents, be sure to bring your cameras). Kids of all ages can check out the NASCAR racer and purchase souvenirs from the Home Depot Racing Team. There will be plenty of other kids’ activities, more live entertainment and food available for purchase.

The schedule of Founders Day events begins with the lighting of holiday decorations at City Hall on Monday Nov. 30. From there events include holiday book readings by the Mayor and City Council members, a children’s holiday decoration-making event at Johns Creek Arts Center, a combined holiday card signing for the troops and Toys for Tots drive at City Hall, and a “holiday workshop” hosted by Emory Johns Creek Hospital.

Haynes Bridge Middle School Cans Hunger

DSC01420

McKinley Brown & Bradley Flink collect cans

–Karen LeCates – HBMS PTA President & Clinic Assistant

For two weeks in November, Haynes Bridge Middle School waged an all out canned food “fight” against hunger collecting over 2,700 cans on a goal of 1,800. With enrollment at approximately 630 students, that translates to a whopping 4.3 cans per student! All classes participated, but six eighth grade classes took the mission a step further by declaring a battle against each other. For every three cans a student brought in, they were given a laminated picture of food to “throw” at a teacher’s door. The teacher with the most food on his/her door will wear a peach costume in December at the next “I Can Wear Jeans” day. This battle proved to be a successful strategy, bringing in over 1,000 cans in eighth grade alone.

Canned food donations were picked up by North Fulton Charities to stock their pantry.

Volunteers Paint the Fire House

Johns Creek Fire Station

Johns Creek Fire Station

To show appreciation for our new Fire Department, the Johns Creek Community Association (JCCA) hosted a community project to paint the exterior of the Newtown Fire Station on Old Alabama Rd. on Saturday, November 21.

The City provided the paint and the JCCA provided the labor.  More than 10 volunteers show up for the morning shift and another 8 work the afternoon shift.

Special thanks goes out to Milan Kopriva of Milan Painting and Remodeling, a resident of Rivermont, who donated his time and his professional painting equipment.  “Milan did an amazing job – we couldn’t have done it without him,” said Stan Stanfill, JCCA board member.  If you need to contact Milan, his e-mail address milansolution@yahoo.com and his cell number is 770-572-7450.

“We had so many people volunteering that we had to turn people away,” said David McKay, JCCA president.  He continued, “We live in an amazing city where people show up to support our fire department just because it’s the right thing to do.”
